How can I get my daughter to listen to me?

Q: My daughter is in her thirties – never been married. She is seeing someone who I think is a jerk, but I may as well talk to the wall as she won’t listen to a word I say. How can I get her to listen to me?

A: Guess what? You can’t. I once heard an expression that would apply here: Parenting adult children is a lot like feeding alligators – if you stay too far away, the alligators might starve – but if you get too close, you might lose your head. Even if she were to listen to your advice, it doesn’t mean that she will do what you say. Let her know, however, that you love her and while you can express your concern, suggest she take time in making a decision that is right for her. Beyond that – hope for the best!
